This is a “Koryu” (old style/school/manners) martial art. I teach the traditional Japanese sword style of MuTo Ryu*. With the sword, students learn traditional martial wisdom and scholarship. Through careful and deliberate practice of the physical philosophy the student is guided down the path of the heart-mind which builds the relationship of mind, body, and spirit.
Classes are for all ages. In addition to being a martial and fitness activity it also builds a depth of human feeling, honor, and respect.
It is also tremendous fun and good exercise.
There are no belt colors and ranks. The student is always returning to the beginning and working additional layers of learning like the many folds that compound to form a finely forged sword. This art provides a way of understanding how the body works, how to stretch, roll, touch, grasp and release. It is the physical expression of natural philosophy, a way of expressing, in time, the truest nature of yourself and engaging in the truest way with the world and others.
* MuTo Ryu translates roughly as “No Sword Way” or “The Sword of No Sword”
